Description
Enjoy the flavors of Panda Express with this homemade version of their famous Orange Chicken. Crispy chicken coated in a sweet and tangy orange sauce, served over rice.
Ingredients
For the Chicken:
- 2 cups flour
- ½ cup cornstarch
- 2 teaspoons salt
- ½ teaspoon white pepper
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup water
- 2 tablespoons canola oil, divided
- 2 pounds boneless skinless chicken thighs, cut into 1-inch pieces
- 2 cups peanut oil, or as needed, for frying
For the Sauce:
- 3 teaspoons sesame oil, divided
- ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper
- 2 teaspoons minced ginger
- 2 teaspoons minced garlic
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- ¼ cup fresh orange juice
- ¼ cup white vinegar
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 3 tablespoons water
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon orange zest
For Serving:
- 3 cups cooked rice, or as needed
- sliced green onions for garnish
- sesame seeds for garnish
Instructions
- Prepare the Chicken: Combine flour, cornstarch, salt, and white pepper. Add egg, water, and canola oil. Coat chicken and refrigerate.
- Fry the Chicken: Heat peanut oil, then fry coated chicken until golden brown and crispy.
- Make the Sauce: Cook red pepper, ginger, garlic, and brown sugar. Add orange juice, vinegar, and soy sauce. Thicken with cornstarch mixture.
- Coat the Chicken: Toss fried chicken in the sauce with sesame oil and orange zest.
- Serve: Serve the orange chicken over rice, garnished with green onions and sesame seeds.
Notes
- Be cautious when frying hot oil.
- Adjust spice level by adding more or less crushed red pepper.
