Description

This homemade Italian herbs and cheese bread is filled with the rich flavors of aromatic herbs and gooey cheese. Perfectly baked with a crispy crust, it’s a delightful addition to any meal or a tasty snack on its own.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons dried Italian herbs (basil, oregano, thyme, rosemary)

Yeast Mixture:

  • 1 packet (2¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1¾ cups warm water (about 110°F)

Cheese:

  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Extra flour for dusting

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy. Add flour, salt, herbs, mozzarella, and Parmesan. Mix until sticky dough forms.
  2. Knead the Dough: Transfer dough to floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth. Add more flour if sticky.
  3. Proof the Dough: Place dough in greased bowl, cover, and let rise in warm place for 1-2 hours until doubled.
  4. Shape the Bread: Punch down dough, shape into loaf or pan. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat the Oven: Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C). Place water pan in oven for steam.
  6. Bake the Bread: Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden and hollow when tapped. Internal temp should be 200-210°F.
  7. Cool and Serve: Cool on wire rack before slicing and enjoy warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • For a more intense flavor, add extra herbs or try different cheese combinations.
  • This bread pairs well with pasta, sandwiches, or olive oil for a simple snack.
